OR
DMT (Damascus Manipulation Tool)
I created this site so that I could simulate different Damascus manipulation effects on any modern device/browser (including phones)
Instructions:
- Choose an image from your device by clicking on the top left of this page (or any of the pages).
OR
Select an example from the top right.- The image should load and autohide. If the autohide bothers you just uncheck the "Auto show/hide image" box. You can decide if you want the image shown or not with autohide off by clicking on the Show/Hide Source link.
- I recommend using a square image as input because the tool will resize any image to square which will cause distortion if the original image is not square.
- The image you select will be used in any of the pages (except the Generate page)
- Now pick a page from the menu on the left.
If you don't see a menu then click on the three lines in the top left corner of the screen to open the menu - Each page has its own set of options and manipulations - here is some general guidance
- Clicking "Open Image in a New Window" will open the image generated by the page in a new window. Depending on your device you may need to do this to save the image.
iPhone will allow you to save images to the camera roll if you open in a new window and long press the image for options to save - Clicking "Save Image" will trigger your browsers save image routine. This is implemented on some phones and not others
- Clicking on "Use Generated Image" will take the image generated from the current page and set it as the source image (as well as update the recipe with the current settings). This makes this tool very powerful as you don't need to keep downloading and re-uploading images as you work with them in the tool. That being said there is no undo button so save the generated images if you think you might want to go back to it later.
Note: On the bias page if you click this button it will look like the bias has been undone since it is effectively re-biasing it back to the original square. - "Add Current Settings to Recipe" will add the settings defined on the current page to the recipe box.
Note: If you click on "Use Generated Image" it will automatically add the settings defined at that time to the recipe. This button allows you to add current settings for pages that don't have a "Use Generated Image" button or if you are on the last manipulation and don't need to use the generated image button again.
You can also add/edit the notes on your own but if you change the image (choosing a new image, selecting a different example, or using the image generated in the Generate page) the notes get wiped out and start new - "Flip" flips the image in the horizontal direction
- "Mirror" flips the image in the vertical direction
- Clicking "Open Image in a New Window" will open the image generated by the page in a new window. Depending on your device you may need to do this to save the image.
Page specific info
- Generate
- Used to generate an image with layers, squares, grid, gradient, etc.
- Squash
- Squash is meant to simulate squashing a square down into a rectangle for things like simulating C's/W's. It will restack things back to square by default.
- It works best if the layers are vertical
- Bias
- Used to simulate biasing a bar between 5°-45°
- Multiway
- Used to simulate creating a 4 or 9 way restack of bars for mosaics. Can also be used for 2 or 3 vertical stack.
Note: If you use the image generated by a 2 or 3 stack in subsequent pages it will be stretched horizontally to square.
- Used to simulate creating a 4 or 9 way restack of bars for mosaics. Can also be used for 2 or 3 vertical stack.
- Twist
- Used to simulate twisting a bar of steel and grinding into it
- Twist works very similar to how ThorII worked
- the twist amount increases or decreases the number of twists in the simulation
- Grind approximates grinding into the bar and what you would see
- Tile
- Used to simulate tiling mosaic damascus tiles
- Select between 2-6 tiles
- Use warp to change the tile width and keeping the same height. This simulates warping you might get cutting tiles on an angle.
I hope you enjoy using the site and that it is as useful to you as it is to me.
